Artist's Statement:  2008

Each painting is a new dive into the cenote, down deep, past the last flickers of sunlight. What I bring back into light is always a surprise.

I have been delighting in looseness, luminosity, rhythm, color, and the untranslatable calligraphic line.

Seeing a recent painting, a friend remarked, “I see that you added some shadows and some modeling.”

“Hot damn!” I shouted, “I thought I added some violet and some yellow.”

Still, my paintings are informed by divinities found in the mythic moment, owing especially to Hermes, Dionysius, and Kybele.

I paint in acrylics, having confused the turpentine with the wine much too often with oils.

I live retired and ecstatic, with my wife, Julia, in Alger and in Dalmatia.
